August is looking to be a blistering hot month! When being outside gets too sweltering, beat the heat with some indoor activities involving these new pop culture releases. From comic anniversaries to new film releases galore, here’s what we have to look forward to this month.

Marvel 85th Anniversary Special – August 28

Celebrate Marvel’s 50,000th comic book release with this special comic issue delving into the history of the series!

In the far future of the year 50,000, the exploits of every hero from the Marvel Age are the stuff of legend, celebrated by those who remember. Come with Marvel on a tour of the greatest museum in all the cosmos, in which the few surviving relics of those bygone days have been assembled. Each piece tells a unique story — about the Contest of Champions in the Age of Heroes, the greatest triumphs of Ms. Marvel and even the final, secret exploit of Excalibur.

Marvel’s greatest storytellers gather to commemorate the entirety of Marvel’s history in a once-in-a-lifetime issue celebrating the world’s most beloved heroes. Marvel’s 85th Anniversary Special releases on August 28!

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: Shrouded Fable – August 2

The Pokémon TCG meets the Loyal Three in the latest Scarlet and Violet set!

Long ago, a mythical Pokémon, Pecharunt — accompanied by its loyal three retainers — emerged in the Kitakami Region with one goal: to steal the brilliant set of masks held by Ogerpon and its caretaker. In the ensuing battle, Ogerpon managed to slay Pecharunt’s retainers and seal the mythical Pokémon away, but at the cost of the townsfolk’s trust. Now, after centuries of lying dormant, Pecharunt and its Loyal Three are back to wreak havoc in the Pokémon TCG!

A smaller set, Shrouded Fable introduces 99 new cards, including 35 secret rare cards. Packs not only include Pokémon and trainers but also reverse holo energy cards and special reverse holofoil Pokémon cards. The holofoil pattern on these cards depicts a “chain” of Poké balls, alluding to Pecharunt’s ability to “chain” others to its will. In addition, new trainers and supporters such as Cassiopeia will make their debut!

Upcoming Sports Card Releases

2024 Topps Finest Baseball – August 7

Now that the All-Star break has passed, the MLB regular season is in the home stretch, as teams vie to make the playoffs. Although the season is winding down, Topps is still going strong with another popular MLB release hitting shelves soon: 2024 Topps Finest Baseball.

The newest Topps Finest set builds on what collectors have come to expect out of the series while also making some updates to the 2024 release. Collectors have the same flashy designs and vibrant colors to look forward to that are once again printed on high-quality chrome card stock. However, Topps is utilizing a different strategy with their 2024 Finest series and expanding from a 125-card main set to 300 cards.

2024 Topps Finest is reverting to their 1990s main set setups and will once again have a three-tiered series, differentiated by rarity similar to the Panini Select sets. "Common" cards will make up the first 100 cards of the set and the next 100 are considered "uncommon" while the final 100 cards in the new Finest set are "rare." Collectors can expect to find many of their favorite MLB superstars and rookie phenoms, with plenty of colorful parallels, inserts, autographed cards and more to chase.

Star Wars Outlaws – August 30

Experience the first open-world Star Wars game this summer!

Taking place between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Outlaws follows the journey of Kay Vess, an outlaw seeking the means to start a new life along with her companion, Nix. Through fighting, stealing and outwitting their opponents, players will help Kay and Nix join the galaxy’s most wanted in a bid for Kay’s freedom.

Besides a thrilling story, players will get to experience the entire world of Star Wars in whatever way they see fit. From bustling cities to sprawling landscapes, players will enjoy new and iconic locations in their entirety, with the idea of, “If you can see it, you can go there.”

The Crow – August 23

See the 1989 comic book series brought to life on the big screen when The Crow reaches theaters in August!

When fiancées Eric and Shelly are brutally murdered by a gang, Eric is resurrected and given the chance to exact revenge against his killers. Donning the mask of “The Crow,” Eric uses his newfound powers to bring chaos and terror to his murderers, guided by a mysterious crow. The film stars Bill Skarsgård — best known for his portrayal of Pennywise in It (2017) and It Chapter Two — with FKA Twigs, Danny Huston, Laura Birn and Sami Bouajila also making appearances.
